What is nail fungus?

Nail fungus is an infection of a toenail or fingernail that often begins as a yellow-brown or white spot under the tip of the nail. As the infection travels deeper, your nail could thicken, discolor, or even crumble at its edge. Fungus may affect multiple nails at the same time. While not necessarily a cause for concern, nail fungus can look unsightly or lead to complications.

What are the symptoms of nail fungus?

Nail fungus can cause your nails to be:
Discolored Thick
Misshapen
Crumbly
Ragged
Brittle
Smelly
Separated from the nail bed
While nail fungus can affect your fingernails, it more commonly appears in the toenails. It might cause permanent nail damage if left untreated or spread to other areas beyond your feet.

What increases the risk of toenail fungus?

Toenail fungus is caused by different fungal organisms, yeasts, bacteria, or molds. If you have a nail infection caused by bacteria, the affected nail may become black or green. Fungal infections between your toes and other parts of the skin on your feet are referred to as athlete's foot.

Having athlete's foot increases the risk of nail fungus. Other risk factors include aging, walking barefoot in community areas, wearing sweaty and moist shoes, and having psoriasis, a nail injury, a weakened immune system, blood flow problems, or diabetes.

How is nail fungus diagnosed?

Diagnosing nail fungus at Goodman Dermatology involves examining your feet and nails, reviewing your medical history and symptoms, and sometimes taking nail clippings or debris from under your nail and sending it to a lab to pinpoint the root cause of your nail condition.

How is nail fungus treated?

Treating nail fungus at Goodman Dermatology often involves one or more of the following:

Topical medications
Oral medications
Treatment for athlete’s foot
Occasional referral to podiatry for surgical options

It’s helpful to keep your nails trimmed and clean. Wash your feet and hands regularly, keep your nails moisturized, and apply antifungal foot powder to reduce the risk of nail fungus. Wear absorbent socks (change them regularly) and breathable shoes. Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms, pool areas, and community showers.
